Who we are |
|
The Japanese & American Society (JAS) was formed in August of 1985 from what was the Japanese American Cultural Friendship Association (JACFA). JACFA was formed in 1957 by Japanese workers at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. Because membership in the JAS is open to all Japanese and Americans in the local area, the JAS has a very diverse group. Members include company workers, housewives, engineers, doctors, students, and entire families. As of January 2001, the JAS had 210 Japanese members and 60 American members. Although many members can speak both English and Japanese, this is by no means a prerequisite to membership. We encourage all people to join in the fun regardless of their language skills. Members possessing certain skills or talents reflective of their home town culture are often encouraged to share the skill with the group. This can include anything from banjo playing to quilting. Those interested in learning a new skill, or sharing one of theirs often have a forum in which to do so. The JAS offers many language classes, skills classes, field trips and annual events. JAS language classes are available to members. We have many talented instructors teaching Japanese and English conversation classes.
