ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS
First prize winners in last years contest in both Japanese and English will be able to give a speech, but will NOT be eligible for a category prize for this year. They WILL be eligible for full participation next year.
* Definition of American Elementary School Categories:
An entrant in the American Elementary School Age Category shall be required to compete in the Advanced Category if any of the following conditions apply :
-She or he has resided in Japan for 5 years or longer.
-Attended a Japanese kindergarten.
-Attends a Japanese juku, Kumon, or any similar classes taught in Japanese.
-Lives in a home environment where Japanese is the predominant language.
All other entrants may compete as Beginners.
TIME LIMIT
Categories 1 through 4 - 1 minute
Categories 5 through 10 - 3 minutes

Out of a possible total of 100 points
Categories 1,2,3,4, Categories 5,6,7,8,9,10
Pronunciation 40 points Content 25 points
Expression 30 points Pronunciation 25 points
Understanding 20 points Expression 20 points
Deportment 10 points Understanding 20 points
Deportment 10 points
There will be no points awarded for gestures.
The Judging Panel will consist of 4 judges for English Speeches and 3 Judges for Japanese Speeches.
All speeches must be original and unpublished.
AWARDS
Awards will be presented to the three highest scores in each category for English speeches in the Elementary School level as well as in both English and Japanese language Jr. High School, High School and College/Adult Categories. Awards will be presented to the highest score in Japanese language Beginner and Advanced Elementary School categories. Additional prizes may be announced prior to the competition date.

PLEASE NOTE that slots are limited and in the event of a large number of applicants, applications will be processed in the order they are received.
APPLICATION DEADLINE : please fill out an application and drop off or mail to the JAS office by Saturday September
14, 2007.
The deadline to submit a change of title is September 21, 2007
